Happy Birthday, Alex!

Alex is my cat. No, we have diffrent names, he's Alexander. He is eleven now, but we still fight when we're in a mood for that, and he still can wake up everybody in the middle of the night if he thinks his bow is half-empty. We're both pretty pessimistic.

Also, he snores.

A Little Industrial Stuff

Recently a friend of mine came over for a day to see me, drink a couple beers and walk a few miles in the darkest places in Nizhni Novgorod she haven't seen yet. It was cool. Both of us forgotten camera, though.

Have you ever seen a bridge construction site from underneath?

The pictures suck, alright. We've forgotten our cameras, so it's just cellphone. There's more cool places there, and we're planning to repeat the trip with a decent camera and sober.

I'm Back, Baby!

It's been a damn long winter: it really was long and it felt even longer. I literally slept through it, going to work, returning home, watching tv series, working some “side projects”, drinking and actually sleeping; but now I'm finally awake.

It feels surprisingly good. Hi, everybody! Stay tuned.

Gave Up

Got back to Gnome on home PC instead of awesome, which I used last 7 or 8 months. In fact, I even don't know, why exactly. Maybe just missed moving windows manually. It's objectively uncomfortable, but still...

I do remember, though, that I missed a couple of wmii's features while I was getting used to awesome.

Guess, I'll switch back to awesome soon. Xmonad could be a good try – it seems to be interesting, and I'm interested in functional programming, but I just don't have enough time for that. Awesome with it's perfectly usable default config is still the best choice for me.

Update (may, 9, 19:59 GMT): switched back :)

Window Maker Is Back!

That's a great news! I've been using Window Maker for years, and still using in on my office workstation, although switched to Awesome on my desktop at home and laptop (surpisingly, everyday work as sysadmin requires more mouse usage than hacking at home).

So, they are back again. The project uses Mercurial instead of CVS for version control now, and they are preparing 0.92.1 version which, as far as I understand, would be a bugfix release.

It seems that Alfredo Kojima doesn't work on it anymore (AFAIK, he's developing MySQL Workbench in Sun now), but I saw Dan Pascu and Carlos R. Mafra in mailing lists, which should be good, but I have to explanation, why :)

Also, voins started rewriting Window Maker as NextMaker, but there were no updates in his blog for a long time. However there're rumors in Alt Linux community (maybe they aren't even that rumorous, I'm just not close to them) that he actually keeps working.

Again, congratulations to everyone an good luck to they guys. Too bad, I don't have much time for hacking it, too.

Forgetfulness, or Why Integration Isn't Always Good

Moved my jabber server to another physical server, spent week fighting (no that interesting, it's just my lack of python experience) old python 2.3 there to start YIM transport... And forgot my ID at Yahoo!

And of course I forgot the password, too. I just didn't care for more than a year. All my instant messaging is performed thru my jabber account and a bunch of transoprts to other IM networks. I've just set it up once and forgot.

In integrated environments you often forget the details. Write them down, for Heavens sake! Document everything!

Update: restored it. ID was obvious, and having ID I realized I remember password. So always document even obvios things!

Geek Porn

I knew! Everybody knows, in fact. Apple's stuff is porn. People look at it, they want is sooo much, because it so-so-so-so-so good and hot! Yeah, baby!

I'm surprised I'm not addicted to it. Really.

So. Now I have proof. It is porn. I've got e-mail from Apple <News@InsideApple.Apple.com> today with the subject “Check out new 13-inch...”. The rest of the subject was hidden because I use three-pane layout in my e-mail client (BTW, we've released a new version recently).

Yeah. It's just a new MacBook. But still...
